Day Eleven: Edmodo

Edmodo is a web based communication tool designed for use in the K- 12 classroom. The website has the appeal of a social networking site, while providing a secure and safe environment for teachers and students to collaborate.

Video: 20 Ideas for using edmodo with your students.

Edmodo promotes social learning in classrooms with idea sharing, discussion board posts and teacher-student communication. The site allows teachers to create groups of students and disseminate information to those students instantly. Teachers can create an assignment calendar so that students can keep track of homework online.

Additionally, teachers can post assignments, documents, videos and polls for students to access. Edmodo also has an App, which can be downloaded from the App Store and allows students to access their virtual classroom from their mobile devices and tablets.

FreeTech4Teachers:  15 Ways to use edmodo in your classroom:

  1. I was waiting for this one! I love edmodo. I have created pages for my classes although I have not yet utilized them. I am currently playing around with the different features edmodo has to offer before I launch it within my classes. I do believe this is a great tool to communicate and interact with not only students but also parents. Edmodo provides each student with a parent code so parents can log on and see what their individual student is doing. Students who have multiple teachers who use edmodo can easily switch back and fourth between classes, eliminating the number of places and websites they need to refer to for homework, forms, and assignments. In a way it allows you to merge the information on your classroom website and blog into one. You can also create folders and make forms accessible to students. One of my favorite features is that students do not need an email account to join or sign up, yet you can send individuals, groups, or classes messages through their edmodo inbox. Edmodo is a great tool in creating an online community for your students and I will be implementing edmodo within my classroom very soon.

  2. I am really enjoying watching my son (8th grade) using Edmodo in his Science, Social Studies and Computer classes. It is a great way to organize all classes on one site. He has taken quizzes on Edmodo and received study guides and grades through this site, as well. I am hoping to become more familiar with it as a teacher and incorporate it in my classes, as well.

  3. I am using Edmodo as we speak with a senior Health class. Their teacher posted assignments for them to turn in directly to him; quizzes can be given and graded (it has a gradebook within) and we have the students responding to a poll about Obama's new legislation for Health plans to cover contraceptives. The kids took to it well and now they can enter into a discussion by posting their opinions on any subject we decide to throw out there (e.g. Should contraceptives be handed out in public schools?). It is great!

  4. I can't say enough about Edmodo. It is a wonderful way to have documents at your fingertips. You always have online access to every one of your files, Jings, YouTube videos, etc. Being able to organize them into grade level folders keeps the documents you want to give to your students easily asessable. It is also great that you can make folders of documents that your whole class can see, download and print at any time.
On thing I like about the Quiz feature is that you can see the percentage of students who got each question wrong. It is great feedback for improving class instruction. The test scores are also recorded in a Gradebook that you can export as an Excel file using CSV (Comma Separated Variables)Edmodo stores all your Quizzes so you can use them year after year. You can also bulid new Quizzes from your old ones.
One thing that is great about the calendar is that students can see ALL of their assignment on it from ALL of their different teachers. They can recognize when they need to gear up for a heavy load. If club advisers post meeting times they can see them as well.
You can also join online communities. I have learned so much from the Computer Technology community and BIE which is the Project Based Learning community.

  5. DAY 11 - EDMOTO
I have been using Quia.com for similar purposes. It will be interesting to compare and contrast the benefits offered by each of the two sites. I like the fact that Edmoto lets students keep files from different classes together.

  6. Edmodo is a great program and I was glad that our Tech staff at Thompson gave us a workshop on this platform earlier this year. I immediately formed groups for all of my classes and uploaded my art journal assignment to all of my art classes. They now can not only access the PDF of the journal topics but I created a response document that they can use to submit their journals electronically right to edmodo!! It is easier for them and myself because I don't have to lug home 200 composition books to grade. I can make comments and post grades right in the site. Students can communicate their questions to me and I like seeing their interactions with each other as well. They have a little incentive feature where you can give the kiddies reward badges. I thought that was very fun and it allowed me to create their look too. I still need to find time to explore all it can do but I will definitely keep using it!

    1. I have been working with edmodo however I did not notice a student reward feature, how do you access the reward badges?

    2. Lauren if you click on a student in one of your groups a window will open and it says award badge at the bottom. If you click on that it will open another window where you can create a badge by uploading an image.

    3. Also Lauren just noticed, on your home page where it says suggestions is an icon that says "Create Badges for your students" where you may also access that part of the application.

  7. One more wonderful thing about Edmodo. When students get into higher institutions they will have to learn how to download files from teachers and to turn work in online. They learn these skills in Edmodo. They learn that files need to be downloaded and stored in organized files. The downloaded files can be edited and saved until they need to be uploaded and returned. Original work can also be uploaded and submitted to the teacher or professor. Students become aware of compatibility issues like handing in documents generated in different applications. They understand the importance of a PDF (Portable Document Format) that can be read by Adobe Reader. They learn to save files in different formats that can be shared. These skills are good to have.

  8. Kids love technology. Kids love Facebook. This is a fun way to incorporate a Facebook-like program into the classroom. I have set up my classes as well, I just have yet to get the students signed on.

  9. Definitely something that I believe I can really use. I am going to spend my prep today setting this up, and think I'll use this more than the blog.
